Air Force veteran Troy Whitaker struggles with sleeping, concentrating and remembering things.

He admits he sometimes "goes blank."

Whitaker, 39, of Hurricane, is one of more than 7,000 Americans suffering from traumatic brain injury. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a traumatic brain injury is caused by a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain.

These injuries are present in about 20 percent of soldiers who have survived combat injuries.

But there is a glimmer of hope for those diagnosed with the ailment, and that hope comes from a simple computer software program.
