Oklahoma owes its chief art deco treasure to a stubborn woman's
heart and earnest giving through hardship.
Originally called the Methodist Episcopal Church South, Tulsa's
oldest Methodist congregation didn't tack Boston Avenue onto its
name until 1908, when the 15-year-old church finished a $40,000,
four-story brick structure at Fifth Street and Boston Avenue.
Supported by four huge columns at its courthouse-styled entrance,
its 200 worshippers passed under stained-glass windows that opened
to provide relief on hot days.
Although a large structure, within a decade the growing
congregation felt squeezed not just by the church walls, but by the
increasing number of oil-boom skyscrapers. As ...
