THE Parc des Sports, which nestles at the foot of the Alps, in
this beautiful French town where the air is clear and the water that
pours down from the mountains into the lake so clean it is
drinkable, is as far away as it is possible to imagine being from
heavily polluted Beijing.
But it was here that the Olympic Games in August really began to
come into focus for everyone involved with the sport. At this
corresponding event in Bydgoszcz four years ago Paula Radcliffe
broke the UK record for 5000 metres as Kelly Holmes was injured and
failed to make the team, so perhaps not too much to read into its
significance.
