Article: 8:43 p.m.: San Bernardino plans to put more teeth into code enforcement

SAN BERNARDINO - Efforts by officials to put more teeth into code enforcement have added a new term in the city's legal lexicon.

"Administrative civil penalties." Noun. The part of San Bernardino's municipal code that allows city officers to impose fines of as much as $1,000 per violation, per day, for any violation of city code.

City Attorney James F. Penman said code enforcement officers, as well as police and some members of the Fire and Development Services departments and City Attorney's and City Clerk's offices will begin serving notices of the new penalties Tuesday.

The new tool amounts to "significantly increasing the enforcement of city ordinances," Penman said.
