Ex-Pirate Pena receives warm welcome

There were A-Rod and Derek Jeter, drawing loud cheers and boos at a polarized PNC Park. Same for Jason Giambi.

Only one man in pinstripes received all-out applause when the New York Yankees were announced before the series opener with the Pirates.

There would be no booing Tony Pena. Not in Pittsburgh.

"It's nice to come back and see so many people you know and so many old friends," Pena said in the Yankees clubhouse Wednesday afternoon. "Anytime you step in the ballpark and you hear people calling your name, it makes you feel great."

Pena, the immensely popular catcher for the Pirates from 1980 to 1986, is in his third season as the first-base coach with the Yankees.
