Lincoln Street to be closed overnight

LEWISTON - Work on a downtown storm water cistern should wrap up in the next week, as crews prepare to close Lincoln Street overnight Friday.

When completed, the cistern will store storm water runoff, keeping it from dumping directly into the Androscoggin River or overwhelming the city's sanitary sewer system.

Once the storm has passed, that water can be diverted to the sanitary sewer for treatment.

It's part of a 15-year mandated program to meet federal water quality standards.

"It will be completely automatic when it's finished," project engineer Jeff Beaule said. "It will fill and drain on its own and has flushing gates that will keep it clean."
