NASCAR extends its reach ; Televised races bring sport across oceans

From the fans who've come from 31 countries, to the reporters
whose credentials trace back to 19 foreign nations, to the drivers
who hail from four continents, and even to the cars that originate
in a fifth, it's clear that this is not your daddy's NASCAR.
Having long outgrown its deep Southern origins to become
America's second-most popular spectator sport, NASCAR now has its
sights on an even broader fan base. NASCAR officials want to ingrain
the sport's stars internationally, without necessarily needing to
stage races overseas. The goal is to infiltrate fresh markets via
television and thereby open up the opportunities necessary to
sustain the sport's growth.
