Article: TV gardening `linked to rise in pond deaths'

GARDENING SHOWS that encourage people to install water features may be partly to blame for a sharp rise in cases of children drowning in garden ponds, researchers said yesterday.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) said it was best for parents "simply not to have" a pond because "children will always find a way in and can die in two or three inches of water".

A study by the University of Wales, the Royal Life Saving Society, and Rospa found that 104 children drowned in 1998-99 compared with 149 in 1988-89. But garden ...
