BRITISH MUSEUM director Neil MacGregor has turned down the chance
to head New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The 62-year-old arts leader had been hotly tipped to succeed
Philippe de Montebello, the long-serving Met director who is leaving
at the end of this year.
Bosses at the American institution were desperate to lure Mr
MacGregor but he has chosen to continue his role in the capital.
He said today: "I always made it clear that I wanted to stay at
the British Museum. The opportunities and challenges for a world
collection in London are clearly limitless." Mr MacGregor added that
