Commentary: The art of throwing people under the bus

Responsibility! The definition of the word is known by all of us in this profession, but it is very rare that you will hear anyone use it in the following: "I take full responsibility for..."

It is an unfortunate but recurring scene in the American legal community today: Partners, associates, paralegals and secretaries shamelessly and callously throw one another "under the bus" to avoid taking responsibility for a litany of things. Whether it's the failure to return a client's call, file a motion on time or properly serve papers, it is rare indeed to hear anyone -- from the top of the employment food chain on down -- take responsibility for not completing the act.
