Apounds3 Million rescue package has been unveiled to save upland
farming in the South West.
It will be launched in late summer, with project officers
appointed to co-ordinate schemes aimed at reversing the loss of
income and support on hundreds of hill farms on Exmoor, Dartmoor and
Bodmin Moor.
Hill farming has traditionally been agriculture's most heavily-
subsidised sector, a fact which has recognised the importance of the
role played by upland farmers in maintaining some of the country's
finest landscapes.
The South West's moors provide 285 square miles of public open
space as well as unique wildlife and archaeology. But without
