Article: Women are still sold short by patriarchy ; I write in response to Mary Timball's letter "Why this craze to defeminise women?" (June 17). Feminists do not always agree among ourselves and do not all share the same outlook.

I write in response to Mary Timball's letter "Why this craze to
defeminise women?" (June 17). Feminists do not always agree among
ourselves and do not all share the same outlook.
Mrs Timball refers to such things as using the title "guys" for
both men and women, the adoption of men's-style clothing by young
women, giving daughters traditionally boys' names, and the
preferential use of unisex toilets. But such gestures avoid the
basic problem and even exacerbate it by suggesting - as Mrs Timball
points out - that women are only equal to men if we ape them.
As I see it, a deep institutionalised imbalance has developed
between men and women under the centuries-old patriarchal system
