NO MATTER how long the plucky British contenders manage to survive at Wimbledon, the strawberries always seem to get top billing which is a shame as the cream also plays an important role in what has become an iconic summer partnership.

Earlier in the year there were dark mutterings from strawberry growers about the unseasonable frosts during May and the possibility of shortages and even higher prices during Wimbledon fortnight.

Fortunately, the cut-throat nature of the berry-growing business has kept prices realistic and they are at much the same levels as last year.
