JULY
ONCE, in the days when the seasons fulfilled their allotted
roles, July marked the onset of high summer. But whether we are in
for a month of deep blue skies and fluffy white clouds or the
relentless downpours we endured last year, this is a time of plenty.
The first wild sea-trout are returning to these shores and
Continental melons are starting to come to market. Rose veal, reared
at Christmas, is in its prime.
Raspberries are at their best and gooseberries will appear at
both ends of the month, starting with the tart fruit that's perfect
for stewing and followed by the larger, sweeter, dessert
