'He had all the qualities that you wanted in a coach' ; The Miami football legend is fondly remembered as a player, a coach and a remarkable person.

OXFORD -- Miami University has lost one of its stalwart members of the Cradle of Coaches. John Pont, who died at his home in Oxford on Tuesday, July 1, at age 80, succeeded spectacularly as both a player and head coach for Miami's football team, and that was only the beginning of a career that seemed to defy time and space.

"John was beloved by Miami and the Oxford community," said Miami athletic director Brad Bates. "He was a leader among leaders in collegiate athletics and shaped the future of intercollegiate athletics as a student, coach and administrator."
