In two previous columns I told you about a T-shirt ban at a mall
outside Albany that mushroomed into a federal lawsuit.
The lawsuit was not over the wearing of the T-shirt, but the
posting of a billboard outside the mall in response to the ban. The
billboard, posted by the NYCLU, featured a mouth taped over and
sarcastic text, "Welcome to the mall. You have the right to remain
silent. Value free speech."
Among its many activities, the New York Civil Liberties Union
lobbies government officials throughout the state. Consequently, it
must register as a lobbying entity and file annual reports detailing
lobbying activities.
