Article: Crime Stoppers in Oklahoma City finds success with text tips

Master Sgt. Charles Phillips with the Oklahoma City Police Department wasn't looking to make new friends when he began encouraging citizens to send him text messages about six weeks ago.

What he was hoping was that citizens, and especially teenagers, would text-message crime tips anonymously to his office at Crime Stoppers.

Since the program was launched in May - complete with posters and bus stop advertising around town - Phillips said Crime Stoppers has received 150 tips from text messages. Of that number, seven cases have been solved.

"It's been quite successful to this point," Phillips said.

On average, Crime Stoppers receives 400 tips a month via phone calls and the Internet.
