A HIGH-flying university student has been jailed after admitting
a string of armed robberies to fund his gambling addiction.
William Mears, 19, of Regent's Park, Exeter, was sentenced to
three years after he pleaded guilty to carrying out a series of
knife-point robberies in both Exeter and Hertfordshire.
The student, in his first year at the prestigious London School
of Economics, raided shops, a petrol station and a McDonald's outlet
to feed his addiction, St Albans Crown Court heard.
The student, a former pupil at Exeter School, wore a balaclava
and armed himself with a knife to carry out the raids.
He pleaded guilty to two armed robberies and asked for six other
offences to be taken ...
