Raton Hopes for Economic Benefits of Racetrack ; Residents Eager For Jobs and Tourism

SANTA FE -- Raton residents are hoping a proposed racetrack- casino could bring more than just ponies back to their hardscrabble town.

"The majority of people here are just desperate for more jobs," said Barbara Riley, who runs the Heart's Desire Bed & Breakfast and believes a "racino" would make Raton a destination rather than just a highway stop-over. "This is an extremely depressed economy."

Raton once thrived with a coal-mining industry that provided decent-paying jobs and a horsetrack that drew locals and tourists alike. But the track fell on hard times and closed in 1992, and the town is still reeling from the shuttering of the York Canyon coal mine a decade later.
