Local agriculture, consumer benefit

MILLERSBURG -- A gathering of area farmers is trying to make others aware of the cost savings and value of local agriculture, enticing them with a series of lectures, entertainment activities and demonstrations on July 19.

"The average hamburger in America sees more of the United States than the consumer does," said Jerry Miller, a committee member helping put together the fourth annual Family Farm Field Day. "Imagine the fuel and the energy it takes to transport that food over half the country? Surely we can do better than that."

In conjunction with the Small Farm Institute, the committee -- composed of several local farming families -- hopes to do just that.
