Butdorf spells her way to the quarterfinals in national bee

WOOSTER DISTRICT -- A local champion speller arrived in Washington, D.C., at the end of May for her opportunity on the national stage with two huge binders of words and a thick dictionary.

"Anyone looking at me would know I was a speller," said Gillian Butdorf, whose purpose was accentuated by a sweatshirt -- adorned with a graphic of a bumble bee and her contestant number, 193 -- given to her by a friend.

Spellers hoping to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee again next spring probably already have begun to prepare.

"They go home (from the bee) and start studying," Gillian's father, Chris, said.
