It's letter/number designation has been seen before on the race tracks of Europe and the USA, where the original R8 racer swept all before it at Le Mans and in the American Le Mans Series.

It was, and still is, the most successful sports racer of its type and its phenomenal record is only likely to be beaten by its younger sister - the diesel-powered R10, which has already tucked two Le Mans victories under its belt at the La Sarthe circuit.
