State could turn into a dour, left-leaning place

Divide America into red and blue states based on which political party is dominant and, over the past few decades, New Hampshire has gone from dark red to purple to a pale blue that could be deepened by the November election.

The Granite State was once the most conservative in the land. Its politicians said things like "Homosexuals can donate blood as long as they donate all of it," and get reelected. Its governor asked for nuclear weapons for the National Guard and dressed in military fatigues to join in the arrest of anti-nuclear protesters. (Note to Gov. John Lynch: If you're tempted to emulate Meldrim Thomson Jr., remember Mike Dukakis and the tank.)
