Millions face Pounds 245 rise in car tax after Labour vote victory

MORE than two million families face paying up to Pounds 245 extra in car tax after the Government last night won a battle over its controversial plans to target the most polluting vehicles.

All vehicles registered since 2001 will be affected by the tax rises after a Tory attempt to prevent the increases being applied to cars bought before the measure was announced in last March's Budget was defeated.

The Tories branded the increase "unfair and ineffective" but, although several Labour backbenchers spoke out against the "retrospective" application of the increases, a major rebellion was averted. The Government won the key vote by 303 votes to 240, a majority of 63.
