Stranded & Seething ; Transportation Service For Local Elderly And Disabled Off To A Rocky Start With New Operator. But Rrta Says Be Patient, Things Will Improve.

Getting around the county for some elderly people turned into a nightmare this week, when a new company took over a shared-ride service for the Red Rose Transit Authority.

Two people, including a woman in her 90s, were stuck on Red Rose Access vans for as long as five hours on their way home from adult day care.

Others were stranded at their destinations, dropped off but never picked up. Others had their rides to area senior centers show up before 6 a.m. and the riders were dropped off outside centers that were still locked.

It's been horrendous, said Helen Bechtold, director of the Columbia Senior Center.
