Although I have spent much of the past three years reading in the British Library or writing at home in Kent, in my mind I have been in the sultry and exotic city of Granada.

For the second time in my life a place gave me the idea for a novel (the first time it was Crete) and though it's not exactly ideal to have the source of inspiration several thousand miles from home, it gave me a good excuse to visit repeatedly what must be one of the most enchanting cities in the world.

I have now been to Granada in every season and all weather conditions, on days when the pavements were melting and days when the iciness of the air took my breath away.
