The real meaning of Independence Day

We have an annual tradition on the Fourth of July.

For the past 15 years or so, we prepare picnic-style food and head out to Lake Gregory, where we join about eight other families and have a sort of tailgate party.

It is there we see people we haven't seen all year long. All of our kids sit around and catch up on each other's lives, and the adults do the same. We spend too much money on those glow-in-the- dark necklaces that beam pink, yellow and green when it gets dark outside. Then at 9 p.m., we settle down in our lawn chairs to watch what is usually an amazing fireworks show.
