When Herbert V. Kohler Jr. struck his ceremonial first drive at
the opening of Blackwolf Run on a pleasant early-summer day in June
1988, he did more than launch a golf ball.
The president and CEO of the Kohler Co. launched a golf empire
that within a few years would turn sleepy Sheboygan into an
international destination.
He launched a golf renaissance in Wisconsin, the scope and
breadth of which was unimaginable at the time.
And he launched a personal transformation that took him from a
man who knew or cared little about golf to an iconic figure, with
power and influence that extends to St. Andrews, Scotland, the
game's ancestral home.
