City Gets Tough on Fireworks ; Possession Will Carry Penalty

You don't have to use illegal fireworks this Fourth of July weekend to get in trouble.

Possessing them will carry the same penalty as igniting them: up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Fire department officials say it's the first time they've cracked down on possessing illegal fireworks. The fire department had previously only cited people caught using them.

"We (want) to make a bigger impact this year on people who use and have illegal fireworks," Albuquerque Fire Chief Robert Ortega said. "Before we were not getting the impact we wanted."

AFD received more than 2,000 complaints of illegal fireworks last year.
