3 Gray Wolves Illegally Killed ; n One-third of wolf deaths since January credited to foul play

LAS CRUCES -- Three of the nine endangered Mexican gray wolves that have died in the wild since the start of the year were illegally shot, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Thursday.

Still pending are the results of a necropsy aimed at determining the cause of death of a fourth wolf, the alpha male (AM) or lead male of the Luna pack, AM583, whose body was found May 13.

The three wolves illegally shot since the start of the year were all alpha females, designated AF by the recovery program, and they are generally the only adults in a pack to mate and bear young.
