Casino owner Don Barden deserves credit for building as much of
his North Shore casino as he has in today's brutal economic climate,
Gov. Ed Rendell said today.
Work on the Majestic Star Casino slowed last week when Barden
told contractors he didn't have the $10 million he owed them for
work performed in April. As workers were being told they shouldn't
come back to the job the next day, Barden's spokesman told reporters
he had gotten a commitment for $120 million from a Chicago investor
and hoped to finalize funding for the $780 million project soon.
"Give Don Barden some credit. He has kept construction going
almost unbroken," Rendell said. "It's a tough financial market for
everybody."
