Turkey's AKP defends itself against anti-secular charges

ANKARA, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Turkey's Islamist-rooted ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) is defending itself in the country's highest court Thursday against charges that it had sought to undermine the secular system and should be closed down.

The chief prosecutor is demanding that the ruling party be disbanded and that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and 70 other party members be barred from joining a political party for five years.

In the closure case against the AKP, the Constitutional Court has been listening to State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek and AKP Deputy Group Chairman Bekir Bozdag on Thursday.
