Swiss team's "solar taxi": Driven by the sun - and a cause

A Swiss team touring the globe in a solar-powered car visited Portland on Monday to promote solar energy as a viable solution to oil dependence and climate change. The "solar taxi," a three- wheeled electric car that's powered entirely by the sun, rolled into Portland for the second stop on its North American tour.

"If we can drive it around the world, it shows the technology is ready," said Louis Palmer, the lead on the project and an elementary- school teacher in Switzerland. "I want to show we have the resources right now for oil independence."
