Octopus watchers take part in a piece of gripping research

A Yorkshire aquarium is reaching for answers to the age old question of whether the octopus has a favourite arm.

Staff and visitors at Scarborough Sea Life Centre are taking part in a month-long study to determine whether the creatures prefer any of their eight tentacles for feeding and other tasks.

The results could shed light on the evolution of "handedness" in animals. Aquarist Helen Fletcher said: "There have been several investigations into arm usage by octopuses. But they have involved small numbers of octopuses and the results have been conflicting."

The Scarborough research is being duplicated simultaneously at 23 other Sea Life attractions across Europe - and aims to point the way ...
