Thanks to the driving force of co-owner William Dean Singleton,
MediaNews Group has emerged as the nation's eighth largest newspaper
chain.
Thanks to Singleton, MediaNews Group is also known as a profit-
driven business whose reporters once chucked beer cans at Singleton
when he shut down their newspaper.
MediaNews has steadily grown since Singleton bought his first
newspaper in 1983. The group now operates 37 daily newspapers and
111 weekly and nondaily publications, organized among four
subsidiaries. It reported $302 million in revenues in 1997, and a
net profit of $17.4 million.
Singleton looks for smaller, even troubled newspapers, according
