Given the way Jan Ullrich devoured the competition last year, it
seemed all but certain that this Tour de France would be another
picnic for the 24-year-old German "wunderkind" and his Telekom
teammates.
That, however, was before Ullrich's "winter bacon crisis," as it
has been dubbed by the German press. To sum up his training
philosophy: "Nautilus? Nein. Knockwurst? Fine."
Now, the French are dreaming of Richard Virenque in yellow, while
all of Italy is holding out hope that Marco Pantani can add the
"maillot jaune" to his growing jersey collection. Fans of Swiss Alex
Zulle, Dane Bjarne Riis and Spaniard Abraham Olano can be forgiven if
