A federal jury awarded two companies more than $468,000 this
week, just a few months after a state jury entered a $12 million
verdict against the companies for claims arising from the same
issue.
A Kansas City federal jury decided Wednesday that the small town
of Greenwood, in Jackson County, should pay $468,209 to Martin
Marietta Materials and Hunt Martin Materials. The companies used a
city street in Greenwood to transport crushed rock in trucks.
The companies sued after the town enacted an ordinance barring
them from using the street, citing the damage the trucks caused to
the road over time. The lawsuit claimed the ordinance violated a
