Kansas City Legal Briefs: July 11, 2008

A California man who is under federal investigation for representing clients without a law license was briefly allowed to practice in the Western District.

Howard O. Kieffer had filed a sentence reduction motion earlier this year for a Missouri man who pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography. Kieffer claimed to work for Federal Defense Associates of Santa Ana, Calif. He was granted permission to appear pro hac vice.

But Kieffer recently admitted he wasn't a lawyer to a federal judge in North Dakota and is now under criminal investigation.

Kansas City attorney Bruce Houdek sponsored Kieffer as local counsel in Kieffer's request, which was granted in April.
