Seventy-five years ago today, New Hampshire ratified the 21st
Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 17 minutes, repealing the
prohibition of alcoholic liquors. After the necessary three-
quarters of the states had ratified the amendment on Dec. 5, 1933,
repeal was achieved.
New Hampshire's strong desire for repeal stands in sharp contrast
to its longtime support for Prohibition. Although it was later
reversed, the state had established statewide prohibition years
before the Civil War.
After the war, U.S. Rep. Henry Blair of New Hampshire
unsuccessfully introduced a prohibition amendment to the
Constitution, the first time such an amendment had ever been
