Denials similar to those made last week by Kansas City are expected soon from Mayor Mark Funkhouser and his wife, Gloria Squitiro, regarding a lawsuit brought by a former staffer.

An attorney for Kansas City last week claimed plaintiff Ruth Bates cannot prove the claims in the petition she filed last month in Jackson County Circuit Court.

Bates, who is black, worked in the mayor's office for a year until May, when she was allegedly fired. She claimed she was subjected to discriminatory and retaliatory treatment based on her race and that she was the victim of sexual harassment.
