It may come as a surprise to summer visitors to our iconic
landscapes - Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bodmin - but the South West's
uplands are at a crisis. This is not a personal opinion but the view
of a task force composed of 13 quangos, including Defra, Natural
England, Government Office South West and the two National Park
authorities.
One of Dartmoor's most powerful attractions is the sense of
timelessness, or more accurately the long continuum of man's
history. Wherever the gaze turns on Dartmoor there are hut circles,
prehistoric field boundaries, deserted medieval villages and ancient
granite longhouses - testimony to 6,000 years of settled
agriculture.
