Now the office which serves thousands of households and small businesses could close, leaving mainly elderly residents stranded - the nearest post office being at the bottom of a steep hill.

Opponents of the closure want Post Office Ltd to reconsider its position and have vowed to fight on. But their struggle could be an uphill one as sub-postmaster Rupert Stocks would be happy to retire.
