There has been a post office in the sprawling Townstal
residential and industrial estate on the edge of Dartmouth for close
on 70 years.
Now the office which serves thousands of households and small
businesses could close, leaving mainly elderly residents stranded -
the nearest post office being at the bottom of a steep hill.
Opponents of the closure want Post Office Ltd to reconsider its
position and have vowed to fight on. But their struggle could be an
uphill one as sub-postmaster Rupert Stocks would be happy to retire.
Town councillor Dave Cawley, who runs a mail-order business from
the Townstal estate, said he did not see how he could go into town
every evening with sacks of customer ...
