Your article about e-learning ("Why dons won't be logging on", EDUCATION, 25 April) highlighted the desire for both U21global (the online courses arm of Universitas 21) and the Association of University Teachers to assure the standards of programmes in member institutions. Paul Cottrell of the AUT believes that universities should provide the courses themselves, thereby maintaining control of their reputations. This, however, requires a professional publishing capability as well as academic expertise. Therein lies the dilemma. Most institutions don't possess the professional production skills required.
