Gerald "Jerry" Nell remembered as persistent, self-made man

Gerald "Jerry" Nell, who died Monday, had trouble letting go of his construction business when he passed the torch to his son in 1994.

Nell died after a short battle with small-cell lung cancer. He was 73.

Nell, chief executive of Gerald Nell Inc., Waukesha, invited everyone's input in company decisions, said Michael Nell, who took over as president of the business 14 years ago.

By the time Gerald Nell scaled back his involvement in the company, he had prepared a team of people to run the business.

"He successfully worked himself out of a job," Michael Nell said, "which was too bad, because that was hard for him."
