Residents pay for Kewaskum plant upgrades

Kewaskum residents will absorb a 12 percent increase in their sewer bills to pay for a wastewater treatment plant upgrade, and the village says its hands are tied.

"None of the (village) board members nor myself are excited to raise rates given the situation, but we're required to do this project," said Public Works Director Jerry Gilles.

It's a problem many cities and villages across the state are dealing with as state regulations force changes to aging systems. Judith Gottlieb, basin wastewater engineer for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, said older treatment plants generally struggle if regular major maintenance is not done throughout the years.
