Landgraf Construction Inc. is demolishing St. Raphael's Cathedral
despite the Diocese of Madison saying work would not begin until
July 21.
Those waging a last-minute fight to save the 154-year-old
building and give it consideration as a city landmark at an Aug. 18
hearing said they were shocked to see much of the cathedral's east
wall come down Monday.
"I wonder if (the Most Rev. Bishop Robert) Morlino asked himself
what Jesus would do in this situation," said Stu Levitan, who serves
on the city's Landmarks Commission. "I don't think Jesus would rush
into demolishing the building."
