Engine problem aborts fishing trip ; 28 on Plymouth boat transferred to vessel going on whale watch

People who planned on going fishing wound up going whale watching
instead after trouble in the engine room prompted an emergency call
from a Captain John boat just off Gurnet Point.
Although there was thick, black smoke billowing out of the engine
room, there was no fire, just a disabling engine malfunction,
Captain John Boats manager Erin Bradley said after the incident at
about 9 a.m. Monday.
"We had to be on the safe side once the crew saw the black
smoke," she said.
Two Coast Guard boats went to the scene, as did Plymouth and
Duxbury harbor officials, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration boat and several pleasure boats. Most were turned
