Michael V. Bartlett, 55, a landscape architect who designed
gardens for embassies, commercial projects and private homes, died
July 8 of cancer at his home in Bethesda.
Mr. Bartlett, a Washington native and fifth-generation landscape
architect, began working with his maternal grandfather while
attending a private high school in Rhode Island.
Before graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Mr.
Bartlett led a team of Washington high school students on a project
to renovate two inner-city parks in the District. The effort won a
beautification award from the D.C. mayor's office.
In 1973, he opened his business, Michael V. Bartlett Inc., in
