No one is getting rich on poetry but it still has an active following in Nelson, writes John Ewan. --------------------

A penniless poet called Otto

Cried while eating risotto,

"I've starved for my art

But can't get a start

It's easier to try and win Lotto".

Most people, at some time or other, have written down a few lines of rhyming verse and have wondered what it would be like to do it for a living. And that's about as far as it gets. A few carry on against the odds.

Given that poetry gets few headlines, is seldom represented on the bestseller lists and is actively avoided by some publishers, it might seem surprising that it still exists.
