A reader who has just taken a holiday in Devon was miffed to
discover that he wasn't allowed to dangle a line in the hotel's
waters, even though he had taken tackle along specially. He had piled
his car high with rods, reels, seats and bait boxes, only to find
that the river alongside the hotel was strictly for trout - and that
meant fly fishing.
Our reader was not a fisherman. His son was the passionate angler.
But he wrote to me, asking very reasonably: "How come my son wasn't
allowed to fish with worms for trout, and that my suggestion that he
stick a fly on the hook was met with scorn?" Good question. The basic
